Bullying always happens because someone thinks he or she is more important, not equal, and has the right to hurt others. Luckily, in Slovenia, there isn’t as much bullying as in some other countries; however, with every generation, there seems to be more of it. Why do so many students get bullied at school? Mostly because they are not like others — they don’t follow the crowd, they dress differently, their phone isn’t as good, they are of a different nationality, or maybe it’s the colour of their skin. Where does all this hatred and these jokes come from? The biggest cause is social media. Kids are too young when they get their first phone and end up being poisoned and brainwashed, unable to think for themselves. They create lies that destroy other people, and you can’t know who did it — they’re anonymous because of social media. When we get older, we start thinking for ourselves, and I think bullying decreases; however, it’s always present. With every generation come new memes and vines, and we have to be careful not to mistake them for bullying. If someone enjoys or laughs at the jokes made about them, we call it teasing, but if that person feels annoyed or hurt, it’s bullying. When we see that someone is uncomfortable, we should step in and help them. However, when it gets to the point where we have to help somebody, it’s often too late. Many schools do a lot to raise awareness so that we can recognise bullying in its early stages and prevent it before it starts. Sadly, sometimes we can’t escape it. I have witnessed a lot of bullying, and I can’t describe how bad I felt. The least we can do is tell teachers or parents, who will try to stop it. One person against a whole group of arrogant, narrow - minded, and cold people has no chance. Bullying leaves enormous consequences on people’s personalities, relationships, and social lives. Young people become self - conscious and introverted, and they start to suppress their feelings, which can cause depression and lead to suicide. They begin to believe that the world is against them, that nobody cares, and they lose hope. I think it’s important for them to know that the world isn’t against them — it’s just one or two people. Tell your teachers and parents; they will help you if you ask for help. You can get through it, but you have to work for it — and in the end, you will be free.
